Brit stag and hens ‘doing more to save the planet’ than Rishi Sunak during COP28

British stag and hen parties are "doing more to save the environment" than Rishi Sunak, a nightlife firm has claimed.

Research from leading pre-nuptial party company Last Night of Freedom has revealed British tourists are taking on the challenge of battling climate change, leaving the Prime Minister and his government red-faced. Data analysed by the Tyneside-based organisation has shown stags and hens are increasingly choosing to celebrate in the UK rather than abroad.

These changing habits could be responsible for saving almost 165,000 tonnes of CO2 every single year. Matt Mavir, the firm's managing director, said: "We are seeing an increasing number of our stag and hen bookings opting to stay in the UK for their celebrations, especially since the Covid pandemic.

"Almost two-thirds of those booking group getaways are now choosing to stay in the UK and there are a host of reasons for that. It was almost 50/50 just four years ago, and when the average stag or hen can have 10-15 people on them, it means that many fewer people are using carbon-intensive methods of travel like flying.

"We are seeing an increasing number of our stag and hen bookings opting to stay in the UK for their celebrations, especially since the Covid pandemic. Watching Rishi Sunak at COP28, it would appear stag and hen parties are doing more to save the environment than him."

In the UK, over half a million weddings take place each year, with up to three million people attending stag and hen dos. The carbon footprint of travelling to popular UK destinations like Newcastle, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Brighton for these events is about 0.02018 tonnes per person if you use trains and buses.

However, flying abroad – for example, from Manchester to Barcelona – bumps up the average carbon footprint to 0.554 tonnes per person, which is a whopping 2,645% increase.

  • Rishi Sunak mocked as it appears PM has 'never used a hammer before'

Sunak has been accused of hypocrisy after he diluted key Net Zero proposals and supported more North Sea oil and gas fields, only to fly to Dubai weeks later to criticise fossil fuel use. Environmentally-conscious King Charles also spoke at the two-week COP28 summit, warning that the world is "dreadfully off track" in its efforts to combat the climate catastrophe.

Matt from Last Night of Freedom said: "Looking after our planet is something that we're passionate about. We are seeing an increasing number of our stag and hen bookings opting to stay in the UK for their celebrations, especially since the Covid pandemic.

"I don't think many of our customers would welcome Rishi Sunak's flip-flopping and hypocrisy – and are instead putting him and his Government's climate policy to shame."
