‘EU will beg for Britain’s help’ as France’s rift with Germany ‘threatens bloc’

European Union leaders will “beg the UK to rescue them” with the bloc saddled with massive debts and zero growth, a Brexiteer has predicted.

And Ben Habib believes “pig-headed” France, led by Emmanuel Macron will press on with political integration even at the expense of its own sovereignty.

Mr Habib was speaking after rumours surfaced about the increasingly fractious relationship between President Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, with one insider yesterday telling the Financial Times the pair simply “do not get on”.

Their apparent lack of chemistry has been blamed for a lack of cohesion across the EU27, particularly related to bickering between Paris and Berlin over nuclear power, a crucial aspect of French energy policy.

Mr Habib, a member of the Reform Party who has seen the EU at close quarters as a former Brexit Party MEP, told Express.co.uk: “The rifts emerging between France and Germany threaten the European project.

“In significant part because they need the UK to make it work.”

He added: “The UK provided a much-needed sensible voice and loads of cash.

“The EU now is consumed by its ideology and division between its members. The absence of our cash is hurting greatly.”

Germany was “struggling to reinvent its economy away from internal combustion engines”, Mr Habib said, with the technology required – specifically batteries for electric vehicles – being mass-produced in the UK.

Mr Habib said: “Remember when Brexiteers said we held the cards – we did and do!

“But France is pig-headed – it would rather the EU continues its inexorable march towards political union even if that means the hollowing out of its own country.

“Indeed, nation states across Europe are being hollowed out by the anti-democratic forces in Brussels.

“A socialist economic system, massive debt, massive taxes, massive inflation, and no growth.

“Add into the mix massive immigration and unemployment and you have the ingredients for civil strife. The EU is creaking at the seams.

“They will soon be begging the UK to rescue them once again!”

Nevertheless, European Union countries yesterday overcame a big obstacle in their bid to overhaul the bloc’s asylum rules with warnings that time is running out to clinch agreement on the entire scheme before next year’s EU elections.

EU envoys clinched a deal on a “crisis regulation” of extraordinary measures that a country could take in the event of a massive, unforeseen movement of migrants toward its borders.

It means that EU27 now has a negotiating position to take into talks with the EU parliament.

The deal would involve setting up processing centres on the EU’s outside borders where people would be screened when they arrive and includes the option to detain people until their asylum claims are assessed.

Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, whose country currently holds the bloc’s rotating presidency, said: “Today we have achieved a huge step forward on a critical issue for the future of the EU,” said Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska.

European leaders will gather at Spain’s Alhambra Palace today for a two-day conference, with security tight amid rumours Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky will attend.
