David Cameron flies out to Washington DC to hold talks at US Congress

David Cameron jetted into Washington DC on Tuesday night, where he was due to hold talks over the war in Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The Foreign Secretary was set to meet US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and members of Congress.

Ahead of the talks, Lord Cameron said: “The UK and the US are deeply bound by a shared mission to defend the values that provide security and prosperity for us all.

“That is why we remain unwavering in our support of Ukraine.

“If we allow Putin’s aggression to succeed, it will embolden those who challenge democracy and threaten our way of life. We cannot let them prevail. We also stand united in the Middle East, working together to ensure long-term security and stability in the region, and in responding to the challenges posed by China.”

A Foreign Office spokesman added: “In his first visit to Washington DC as Foreign Secretary, David Cameron will discuss how the enduring partnership between the UK and US is delivering security and prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic.

“And upholding democratic values where they are threatened around the world.”

The talks on Ukraine come after the UK yesterday further targeted military suppliers who are propping up Vladimir Putin’s war machine through a series of fresh sanctions.

Foreign suppliers exporting equipment and parts to Russia are among dozens of individuals and groups who will now be sanctioned to starve Putin of the resources he needs for his illegal war in Ukraine.

Another part of Lord Cameron’s discussions in America will see an effort to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East amid the war between Israel and Hamas.

The former Prime Minister made a surprise return to frontline politics last month when he was unveiled as the Foreign Secretary.
