Proud Boys Leader Enrique Tarrio Sentenced To 22 Years In Prison For Role In January 6th Conspiracy
Enrique Tarrio, the leader of the Proud Boys, was sentenced to 22 years in prison on Tuesday for his role in planning the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
In May, Tarrio was found guilty of seditious conspiracy along with three others, Ethan Nordean, Joseph Biggs and Zachary Rehl.
Tarrio was not present at the Capitol that day, but prosecutors said that he played a key role in the planning.
Tarrio’s sentence is the longest of any of the January 6th defendants.

At his sentencing, Tarrio called January 6th a “national embarrassment” and expressed remorse for what happened, according to the Associated Press. “Inflicting harm or changing the results of the election was not my goal,” he said, as he pleaded for leniency.
Prosecutors, though, characterized the right-wing group’s efforts a “calculated act of terrorism.”
The judge in the case, Timothy Kelly, who was nominated by President Donald Trump, gave a shorter sentence than what prosecutors were seeking, but spoke of the gravity of January 6th. “It can’t happen again,” the judge said, per the AP.
Tarrio’s sentencing took place at U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia, just blocks away from the Capitol. Trump is facing federal criminal charges related to his efforts to remain in power after the 2020 presidential election, with the D.C. trial scheduled to begin on March 4.
