A Labour shadow cabinet minister has refused to say whether Sir Keir Starmer\u2019s Government would ask Rwanda for the UK\u2019s money back, despite being asked the same question four times.<\/p>\n

Appearing on Sky News, shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall failed to answer the simple question, despite Labour having already pledged to spend that same money on solving Britain\u2019s border crisis.<\/p>\n

Asked by Trevor Phillips whether a Labour Government would ask Kigali to return to \u00a3290million already spent by Britain on the deportation partnership, Ms Kendall dodged the question, saying Labour \u201cwant to use the money spent on Rwandas to have a different plan that actually works\u201d.<\/p>\n

After detailing Labour\u2019s alternative border proposals, Mr Phillips said he was \u201cfamiliar with the plan\u201d, but asked a second time whether Labour will ask the Rwandans for the money back.<\/p>\n

Ms Kendall reiterated Labour\u2019s plan to spend the money, but not actually secure its return.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cWell I want to see that money spent\u2026 I want to see that money spent on tackling the root causes of the problem, because it is a serious issue that concerns many people in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Phillips pointed out Labour couldn\u2019t spend the money if they didn\u2019t get it back in the first place.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that Labour\u2019s Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves \u201ctells me \u2018we\u2019re not spending any money on anything\u2019, so how are you going to do this?\u201d<\/p>\n

The Sky presenter asked three more times, each time Ms Kendall refused to say a Labour government would request the money back to fund their border proposals.<\/p>\n

Ms Kendall accused the Government of spending \u00a38million on hotels for asylum seekers a day, and argued \u201cthere is a better way for that money to be spent\u201d.<\/p>\n
