University students have accused an assistant professor of sexual harassment after he allegedly turned poetry classes into 'crude sex talks'.

Dr Efthikar Ahamed 'crossing all boundaries' at the Central University of Kerala, according to his MA English students who lodged a formal complaint to an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC). The final straw came when the teaching assistant allegedly felt up a semi-conscious female student at the university's health centre on November 13.

In total, 33 of 41 students in the class have signed a seven-page complaint, where 31 allegations have been listed against Efthikar Ahamed. The students alleged: "He indulged in major conversations about sex, sexual pleasure, and other forms of pleasure, under the garb of interpreting poetry and literature."

They added that Efthikar Ahamed's class was unsafe for female students because he often reduced women to sexual objects – Despite him being a popular talking head on news channels, and often invited to schools and colleges as motivational speaker. One of many examples given in the complaint said: "Recently, in his class, he had compared the passion of the poet to the fetish of smelling underwear, explaining it further by enacting the same very act."

The complaint added: "He often gets extremely close to female students while talking outside of classrooms, like whispering in their ears, or going near them and sitting on their desks. This habit has made many students in our class uncomfortable."

But the incident that caused the students to finally formally complain involved a semi-conscious woman in the medical centre. The female student collapsed while writing her midterm internal examination on Efthikar Ahamed's paper, due to low blood sugar levels.

On finding the student unconscious, Efthikar allegedly tried to wake her up by patting her shoulder and trying to pick her up by the arms. When she was being taken to the university's health centre, the complaint alleged, Efthikar Ahamed touched the girl repeatedly and tried holding her hands and legs while she continuously rejected his advances, even in a state of semi-consciousness.

The student was said to be physically squirming in discomfort to get away from his advances – as noticed by the doctor at the health centre. The female medical officer said: "I saw Efthikar Ahamed improperly touching the student. The student recoiled and tried to push him away. But she was tired."

However Efthikar Ahamed denied the claims and said the allegation of him sexually touching the unconscious student was fake and orchestrated by the female medical doctor. He also said that there were 22 poems in the course of which only four or five were explicitly erotic.

He said: "What is said in the class cannot be decontextualised and held against me. Can we take an anatomy class without mentioning body parts?"

However, several former students of the department have come forward and said they were not surprised by the complaint against Efthikar Ahamed. One alumni said: "His classes were always peppered with sexually explicit content, so I am not surprised by the complaint."

Since the complaint was raised, the staff member has been asked to stay away from the students – however, he has not been suspended or restricted from accessing the department.

If you or somebody you know has been affected by this story, contact Victim Support for free, confidential advice on 08 08 16 89 111 or visit their website, http://www.victimsupport.org.uk.

For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletter by clicking here.
