The council insists it has no plans to ban buskers<\/p>\n<p>Melvyn Altwarg and Peter Kolofsky, spokespeople for the CGSPA said: &#8216;The performers in Covent Garden are synonymous with the area and breathe life and artistic vibrancy into this special part of London, and the site is a breeding ground for talent who go on to wow audiences all over the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;For the past 40 years, the CGSPA has self-regulated it&#8217;s members to ensure they are well behaved and safe, this has been extraordinarily successful, but Westminster Council are making what we do illegal.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>They continued: &#8216;Since 2021 the scheme across the whole of Westminster has proven vastly ineffective.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It was ostensibly brought in to reduce noise in the borough but we have not agreed to licences and have had very few complaints in Covent Garden.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;In Leicester Square where performers have taken up licences the noise problem has become considerably worse \u2013 the licences in Leicester Square have actually given rise to more noise complaints, not less.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The council, which insists it has no plans to ban busking in the borough, said in a report that previous enforcement efforts were met with fierce resistance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8216;All attempts from City Inspectors to engage with the Covent Garden Street Performers Association failed,&#8217; the document read<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Officers carrying out their roles attempted to act against buskers and street performers in this area.
