London:<\/strong> Britain\u2019s Sycamore Gap tree, a much-loved landmark whose dramatic silhouette featured in a Hollywood movie and was photographed by tourists from around the world, has been cut down in what police called a \u201cdeliberate act of vandalism\u201d.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Sycamore Gap tree located along Hadrian\u2019s Wall near the border of Scotland and England. <\/span>Credit: <\/span>istock<\/cite><\/p>\n Police said they had arrested a 16-year-old male in connection with the felling of the statuesque sycamore in northern England, which is set in a natural dip in the otherwise treeless, sweeping landscape alongside Hadrian\u2019s Wall.<\/p>\n It was also known as the \u201cRobin Hood Tree\u201d after featuring in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves<\/em>.<\/p>\n Photographs showed the tree, estimated to be hundreds of years old and voted \u201cEnglish Tree of the Year\u201d in 2016, lying on its side across the wall next to a freshly-cut stump.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is a world-renowned landmark and the events of today have caused significant shock, sadness and anger throughout the local community and beyond,\u201d said Superintendent Kevin Waring of Northumbria Police.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n An aerial view of the felled tree.<\/span>Credit: <\/span>Getty<\/cite><\/p>\n \u201cAn investigation was immediately launched following this vandalism, and this afternoon we have arrested one suspect in connection with our enquiries.\u201d<\/p>\n The National Trust, who look after the site alongside Northumberland National Park, said it was \u201cshocked and desperately saddened\u201d, while local lawmaker Guy Opperman said everyone was \u201cbereft\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is criminal damage and an attack on one of the nation\u2019s most famous trees,\u201d Opperman said on social media.<\/p>\n Reuters<\/strong><\/p>\n Get a note directly from our foreign <\/i><\/b>correspondents <\/i><\/b>on what\u2019s making headlines around the world. <\/i><\/b>Sign up for the weekly What in the World newsletter here<\/i><\/b>.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\nMost Viewed in World<\/h2>\n
