Photojournalist Kate Geraghty and former national security correspondent Anthony Galloway took home the 2023 Lowy Institute Media Award on Thursday night for their reporting on Russia\u2019s brutal invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian soldiers on a Pion self-propelled artillery system in the Donetsk Oblast in Ukraine, in November 2022. <\/span>Credit: <\/span>Kate Geraghty<\/cite><\/p>\n ABC broadcaster Fran Kelly, a member of the judging panel, said Geraghty and Galloway used photojournalism and the written world to deliver \u201cfirst-hand, powerful accounts that brought the biggest story in the world of the past two years to our homes and our hearts\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cIn the end the judges credited these two journalists with not just navigating a war zone and operating at a high level within that but also for the fact that their coverage of such a well reported global story found new people to speak to and uncovered new evidence of Russian war crimes,\u201d Kelly said.<\/p>\n \u201cI think it\u2019s worth noting that these two were finalists for this award last year, too \u2013 also for their powerful and sustained reporting on Ukraine. Personally, I\u2019d also just like to say that Kate Geraghty\u2019s photojournalism has established her as such an important figure in our national understanding of major events.\u201d<\/p>\n Geraghty was shortlisted in three categories in last year\u2019s Walkley Awards for her coverage of the war in Ukraine, and went on to win the feature\/photographic essay award.<\/p>\n Lowy Institute executive director Michael Fullilove said coverage of foreign affairs was essential for Australian news consumers.<\/p>\n \u201cWe believe the world matters to Australia, and therefore Australians need to be informed about the world,\u201d he said. \u201cAustralians need to see the world through their own eyes. Australian journalists see the Australian angle in a story in a way that others cannot.\u201d<\/p>\n
