Weld County Republican Lori Saine launches run for Colorado’s 8th Congressional District

Less than a year after taking office as a Weld County commissioner, conservative firebrand Lori Saine is launching a run to represent Colorado’s newest congressional district — a part of the Front Range stretching from Denver’s northern suburbs to Greeley.

She joins two lesser-known Republicans, Ryan Gonzalez and Giulianna “Jewels” Gray, a professional photographer from Brighton, vying to represent the 8th Congressional District. But on her newly launched campaign website, Saine targets Democratic state Rep. Yadira Caraveo, who announced her candidacy for the seat in August.

Calling Caraveo “a hard-core Socialist, bordering on Communist,” Saine pledges on her website to secure the border, oppose the teaching of critical race theory in schools and “crack down on social media conglomerates.”

Saine, who was a state lawmaker for eight years, did not return a request for comment.

Another Democrat, Adams County Commissioner Charles “Chaz” Tedesco, is also running for the seat.

On Monday, the Colorado Supreme Court gave final approval to the boundaries of the state’s eight congressional districts. The 8th Congressional District is expected to be Colorado’s most politically competitive congressional race.
