Weather maps show ‘snow falling in UK this week’ in first sign winter is coming

Advanced weather modelling maps show snow will fall in some parts of the UK on one day this week.

The shock forecast comes after three days of balmy conditions in the south. Temperatures on Monday (October 9) surpassed 26C in Kent, marking the first time since 2011 that three consecutive days in October have reached 25C or above.

This unseasonal warmth is expected to come to a chilly end later this week. And now it appears wintry outbreaks are on the cards for some.

Weather maps from WX Charts show snow falling in Scotland and the far north of England on Sunday (October 15). The snow is expected to come down above high ground in Scotland early on Sunday, impacting the Cairngorms National Park, before moving south towards the border.

An area of dark purple on the maps indicates snow falling at a rate of 2cm per hour around Northumberland National Park at 6pm. WX Charts' data suggests 1cm of the white stuff could settle in both national parks.

It comes as El Niño is already underway. The weather phenomenon is generally associated with record-breaking warm temperatures worldwide, but can have a nasty impact on British winters. A Met Office spokesperson previously told the Daily Star: "During El Niño periods summers in the UK can be hotter and drier.

"During El Niño winters can be colder and drier for northern Europe and the UK, while southern Europe tends to get more rain."

Brits could also face the impacts of sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) later this year, which despite its name can also lead to intense cold and snow in the UK. Jim Dale, Senior Meteorological Consultant at British Weather Services, told the Daily Star: "It’s definitely part of the menu of choice.

"Normally you would expect them to happen in the second half of winter, but that doesn't mean they can't happen in November or December – that's quite possible.

"We'll have to keep looking over our shoulders to see what’s happening, but it won’t be for some weeks and months yet."
