Powerful reporting in war-torn Ukraine by The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age has been recognised with a prestigious award that celebrates Australia’s best coverage of global affairs.
Photojournalist Kate Geraghty and former national security correspondent Anthony Galloway took home the 2023 Lowy Institute Media Award on Thursday night for their reporting on Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine.

ABC broadcaster Fran Kelly, a member of the judging panel, said Geraghty and Galloway used photojournalism and the written world to deliver “first-hand, powerful accounts that brought the biggest story in the world of the past two years to our homes and our hearts”.
“In the end the judges credited these two journalists with not just navigating a war zone and operating at a high level within that but also for the fact that their coverage of such a well reported global story found new people to speak to and uncovered new evidence of Russian war crimes,” Kelly said.
“I think it’s worth noting that these two were finalists for this award last year, too – also for their powerful and sustained reporting on Ukraine. Personally, I’d also just like to say that Kate Geraghty’s photojournalism has established her as such an important figure in our national understanding of major events.”
Geraghty was shortlisted in three categories in last year’s Walkley Awards for her coverage of the war in Ukraine, and went on to win the feature/photographic essay award.
Lowy Institute executive director Michael Fullilove said coverage of foreign affairs was essential for Australian news consumers.
“We believe the world matters to Australia, and therefore Australians need to be informed about the world,” he said. “Australians need to see the world through their own eyes. Australian journalists see the Australian angle in a story in a way that others cannot.”
Other finalists were The Australian’s Stephen Rice for a series of reports about Cambodian political influence in Australia, The Australian Financial Review’s Andrew Tillett for his reporting on Defence procurement and operations, and the ABC’s Papua New Guinea correspondent Natalie Whiting for a body of work.
Nick McKenzie, a decorated investigative journalist with the Herald and The Age, delivered the annual Lowy Media Award Lecture.
