BREAKING the 1 billion users mark in 2021, TikTok has quickly become a huge player in the social media game.
Most of us are familiar with the app's logo but what does it mean and how has it evolved over time?
What is the meaning behind the TikTok logo?
TikTok's well known logo – a colourful 3D-effect musical note – was designed by an unknown artist.
The social media giant revealed that the logo was inspired by a concert the artist attended, before being brought on to design it.
Reportedly, the idea behind the design was to recreate the excitement of being at a concert.
This was to celebrate the talented content creators and entertainment value of the app.
Many people may be unaware, but the logo is actually the letter 'd' made to look like a music note, representing the app's former name 'Douyin'.
The company have kept the logo since changing their name and it has become recognizable all over the world.
How has the TikTok logo evolved?
In 2016 the logo did not feature the name TikTok underneath the music note.
This changed in 2017, when in order to increase brand recognition, the name was included in the logo.
In 2018 Musical.ly became part of TikTok and a new logo adding the 3D-effect colouring to the letter 'o' was released.
Who created TikTok?
The app that generated nearly $2 billion in 2020 was created by 38-year-old software engineer, Zhang Yiming.
Zhang has built a $44.5 billion fortune since he co-found ByteDance, the Chinese tech company responsible for TikTok.
Born in China's Fuijan province in 1983, Zhang went on to marry his college sweetheart, who he met at Nankai University.
After graduating in 2005, his first job out of university was at a digital travel booking start-up called Kuxun.
Going on to work at Microsoft, Zhang then founded ByteDance – TikTok's parent company – in 2012, which is now worth a staggering $250 billion.
