Teacher ‘admits sending sex videos to teen students aged between 13 and 15’

A female teacher was arrested for a string of sexual offences including showing pornographic images to her teenage students.

Emily Jean Durden, 19, faces two counts of indecent liberties with a student, three counts of displaying material harmful to minors, and two counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, according to the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office.

The local Fox 46 news channel reports the now-former Cleveland County substitute teacher was arrested for multiple sex-related crimes relating to North Carolina students involved are aged between 13 and 15.

Deputies told the broadcaster that on November 18, the School Resource Office at Crest Middle was told by a parent of allegations that a substitute teacher had possibly been sending their child inappropriate images and videos.

The report sparked an investigation that identified Durden as the teacher who had allegedly started conversations and shared sexually explicit materials with several minors.

Durden was interviewed and has reportedly admitted sending the videos and pictures to the children. She was subsequently arrested, deputies said.

She is believed to be the youngest teacher to be charged with these offences by Cleveland County Authorities.

However, a spokesperson for the district did confirm to WBTV that Durden met the legal requirements to be a substitute because she was older than the age of 18 and had graduated high school.

Assistant Deputy Chief Durwin Briscoe said: "When it was brought to my attention, I questioned it, but I think this a result of our school system, not just our school system, but any employers having to find individuals that are willing to work.

"That’s part of the reason of her age and working in the school system and being so young.

“Parents should always know what their kids are into, be always looking into their social media accounts, looking for individuals that they may be in contact with."

Cleveland County resident Preston Messick told WBTV he attended Crest Middle School and Crest High School and recognised Durden. He said he was very surprised to hear about the allegations.

Messick said: “It’s really crazy to hear something like that, especially since I was coming out of elementary school.

“Parents out there shouldn’t have to worry about their kids getting sent explicit pictures from a teacher to other students.”

She was being held in the Cleveland County Detention Center under a $50,000 (£37,400) secured bond, which she has now posted.

The teacher has since been released from custody awaiting trial.
