A young woman has mysteriously been found dead inside her bedroom that was locked from the inside.

The body of Christina Matos, 20, was found at her apartment in Raleigh, North Carolina on Sunday night after she was reported missing.

A 20-year-old man has been charged with her murder, whom Ms Matos' brother has identified as one of her roommates.

Raleigh police have not said how suspect Eric Gael Hernandez-Mendez knew the victim, nor did they provide a cause of death.

They arrived at Ms Matos' apartment building after receiving an anonymous 911 call.

The caller reportedly said: "I have a concern about a missing person.

"I was really curious if her family called in about it. I have her address, I know where she was last seen. It was on Friday."

Ms Matos' family was reportedly already at the apartment, turning up after becoming concerned that she hadn't been in touch with them.

They'd last spoken to her on Friday, which was her birthday, and told local media she had seemed happy.

Mum Yolanda Matos had a key to the apartment but couldn't open her daughter's locked bedroom door, ABC11 reports. Police arrived and broke down the door, finding the student's body.

Ms Matos was a student at Wake Technical Community College who was studying radiology, her family said.

However, the school told the Raleigh News & Observer that while she had been enrolled in the course last autumn, she was not enrolled in the spring semester.

Brother Abraham Matos told the newspaper that his sister, who had recently been employed as a waitress, was a hard worker.

"She was working two jobs," he said.

"She made sure to pay all her bills and she liked to gift herself for the hard work she'd done."

He claimed the suspect in her murder, Hernandez-Mendez, was one of two roommates who also lived in the apartment.

Ms Matos' parents hope someone will come forward with information and help bring justice for their beloved daughter.

"Who killed her?" Geraldo Matos told WRAL.

"They have to go to jail. They have to pay for the damage they made in our family."

Hernandez-Mendez was booked into the Wake County Detention Centre, but no other information about him has been made public.

The Raleigh Police Department is appealing for information from the public about the case.
