Met Office warnings UPDATED: Whole of UK on alert as snow & sleet hit Britain THIS WEEK
BBC Weather: Amber weather warning issued for snow
The Met Office today issued a severe weather warning for ice covering almost all of the UK. The ice warning is in force on Wednesday until Friday advising of rain, sleet and snow which will leave icy conditions.
The Met Office warning for ice is in force from 8am on Wednesday, January 13, until 10am on Friday, January 15.
The warning has replaced a snow and ice warning which was in effect.
Rain, sleet and snow will die out, leaving a high risk of icy surfaces and difficult travel conditons.
There is a chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces and some untreated ice patches on roads, pavements and cycle paths.
The Met Office warning reads: “A further 0.4 to 0.8 inches (one to two cm) of snow is possible in a few places at first, mainly above 200 metres across Scotland, northern and central England, before residual rain, sleet and snow dies out during Thursday evening.
“Ice is then likely to form on some untreated surfaces, with difficult conditions on some roads and pavements by Friday morning.”

The snow and ice warning reads: “An area of rain pushing eastwards is expected to turn snow in places as it encounters colder air across Scotland and parts of northern and eastern England.
“At first the main hazard may be rain falling onto frozen surfaces leading to ice, especially on higher level routes.
“However, snow becomes more likely during the early morning.
“Heavier snowfall is more likely above 200 m in Scotland and northern England, where two to four inches (five to 10cm) of snow may accumulate, possibly eight inches (20cm) on highest routes.
“At lower levels and further south, 0.8 to two inches (two to five cm) of snow may accumulate in places, but the situation is finely balanced, with the possibility that most lower-lying areas, especially in the east, will see rain or sleet rather than snow.”
