Met Office: Heavy snow to blanket large parts of England and Scotland amid big chill
BBC Weather: Amber warning issued for snow across the UK
The Met Office last night warned of heavy snow in northern and central England today. Up to 1.5inches is expected to fall in the South-east and East Anglia. A Met Office spokesman said: “At first the main hazard may be rain falling onto frozen surfaces leading to ice, especially on higher level routes.
“However, snow becomes more likely during the early morning.
“Heavier snowfall is more likely above 200metres in Scotland and northern England, where 2-4inches of snow may accumulate, possibly 8inches on highest routes.”
Areas at lower levels and further south could see up to 1-2inches of snow, or face rain or sleet.
The warning follows snow and heavy rain in areas yesterday that saw flooding in several places, including St Ives, Cambs, which was surrounded by flood water for the second time in a month after the River Great Ouse burst its banks.
The Environment Agency yesterday issued 27 flood warnings and the grim conditions hampered efforts to distribute Covid vaccines across northern England, with temperatures as low as -6C in Yorkshire and Cumbria. The deepest snow was in Bingley, West Yorkshire, and Strathallan, in Perth and Kinross, both of which recorded 4inches.
Some people made the most of it, with Roundhay Park in Leeds a top spot for tobogganing.
In Rotherham, South Yorkshire, a heart-warming video showed the moment a group of strangers rushed out to help a hearse up a hill after it got stuck in the snow.
Michelle Mulcahy, 40, who watched from her living room, said it “restored my faith in humanity”. The hearse was headed to the nearby crematorium before sliding to a halt.
Northumbria Police reported that 17 vehicles were involved in a succession of crashes on the Coast Road in North Tyneside.
Elsewhere in Europe, Switzerland has been put on high alert for avalanches after two and a half feet of snow fell in 24 hours.
Police in south-west Germany said a 72-year-old woman died after a snow-laden tree fell on her as she walked her dog.
