Brian Laundrie, the prime suspect in the murder of his girlfriend Gabby Petito, shot himself before his remains were partially eaten by alligators, medical examiners have reported.

The 23-year-old’s body found at the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park on October 20.

A backpack and notepad belonging to Laundrie were found near the body and although the corpse had been scavenged by alligators and wild pigs, an examination of dental records has now proved conclusively that it was the murder suspect.

The body was so severely decayed that an anthropologist had been called in to help investigators work out whether it was in fact Laundrie.

The Laundrie family’s attorney Steve Bertolino said in a statement to Fox News: "Chris and Roberta Laundrie have been informed that the remains found yesterday in the reserve are indeed Brian's.

"We have no further comment at this time and we ask you to respect the Laundrie family's privacy at this time."

Laundrie disappeared in September after returning from a road trip without his partner Gabby Petito, 22, and refusing to cooperate with an investigation into her disappearance.

There was significant confusion as to his whereabouts after police surveillance teams identified person getting out of a car near the Laundie house as the suspect, when it was in fact his mum wearing a baseball cap.

Police later explained that Laundrie and his mother are "built similarly”.

An arrest warrant was eventually issued on September 23, and since then the FBI, helped by Laundrie’s family, had been searching for the suspect.

The family advised investigators to take a second look at Myakkahatchee Creek and it was there that the badly mutilate body was eventually found.

Steve Bertolino, told TMZ that both of Laundrie's parents have been informed the cause of their son’s death was suicide.

Saying that Chris Laundrie, 62, and his wife Roberta, 55, were mourning the loss of their son he added that he hoped the discovery would “bring closure to both families."
