The Tesla CEO gave a cryptic “maybe” response when asked if he would consider constructing a logistics warehouse in Germany. It sparked a Twitter frenzy following reports the Tesla CEO was planning to build one of his giga-factories in the central European industrial powerhouse. German media reported that a car and battery factory is to be built near Berlin, and another project by the car manufacturer could soon follow.
The news that Tesla is to build a major plant in Grünheide near Berlin has seen a spike in interest in the electric car maker’s products.
Originally, Tesla wanted to start production on its German-based car plant this summer.
However, in an interview with Reuters TV during a visit to the construction site in May, Mr Musk said: “It currently looks like we can start manufacturing at the end of the year.”
On Thursday the company has applied for approval for the construction of the Berlin car factory.
Now there are reports the electric car maker is planning to build a battery factory in Brandenburg, Germany.
The German state office for the environment announced on Thursday they had received confirmation of the plan for the car factory.
Final environmental approval by the Federal Emission Control Act needs to still be obtained to expand the Tesla operation in Germany.
It will be decided over the next weeks whether the public needed to be involved again in the planning procedure.
