A South Korean prisoner has been executed in China for the first time in nine years.

The man was handed the death sentence after being caught selling drugs in China. South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the man was both sentenced and executed today (Friday, August 4).

It marks the first time since 2014 that a Korean prisoner sentenced to death has actually been executed in China.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said China informed the Korean government it was going to happen beforehand.

A spokesperson for the Ministry said: "We received a message that the death penalty was executed on Friday the 4th for a Korean national who was sentenced to death for drug trafficking in China.

"The Korean government regrets that the death penalty was carried out on a Korean citizen for humanitarian reasons."

According to the Korean government the Intermediate People's Court in Guangzhou, in China's Guangdong Province, sentenced the man to death earlier today.

Heraldcorp reports the man was arrested for selling 5kg of methamphetamine in 2014.

He was sentenced to death in the first trial held at the Intermediate People's Court in 2019, and then again at a second trial at the High People's Court in 2020.

The sentence was being reviewed by China's Supreme People's Court this year. The original sentence was upheld.
