Canny couple fake engagement to blag mega upgrades at The Shard using mum’s ring

A woman faked her engagement to blag major upgrades with her boyfriend at The Shard by using her mum's engagement ring.

Rhian Smith borrowed her mother's precious ring in an attempt to get some freebies with her partner Harry Collins in London on December 3.

The young couple, from Liverpool, pre-planned the dramatic engagement before they went for a meal and an overnight stay at the prestigious site.

They committed to the lie by putting on fancy garments for their "special" night which can be seen in the pairs flash Instagram photo as they dressed in all black.

And their fabricated engagement was a success, as the devious couple managed to fool hotel and restaurant staff into giving them free dessert and a hotel upgrade last week.

Superior rooms in the luxurious hotel cost upward of £795 around this time of year – stretching to £1,045 for city views – while one of its restaurants charges £188 for a wagyu tomahawk steak.

Thousands of online commentators were left impressed after the teen revealed what they had secured for free, with some even vowing to try it themselves.

Rhian said in a Tweet: "Borrowing me mums engagement ring to get a hotel room upgrade and a free [dessert] in the shard tonight.

"We just got engaaaaaged can we have a bigger room pls."

The following morning she posted an update saying "bag secured" to celebrate their freebies, along with a photo showing Harry holding his faux fiance's hand.

She also included a close up shot of their free desserts displayed on plates with "Congratulations" written in chocolate with the engagement ring visible on her finger.

The Tweet has since gone viral, with 7,771 likes, 124 retweets and 36 quote tweets, with most seeing the funny side and sharing their support for the couple.

Some also came out in support of the business, with one writing: "Bet @TheShardLondon @ShangriLaHotels are loving having the p*** taken out of them!! #theshard #liar #fake."

Rhian declined to comment further.
