ATM on British street ‘goes rogue’ and starts handing ‘free cash’ to customers
A “rogue” cash machine has allegedly been handing out free cash to lucky passersby . . . and those seeking to bag some extra dosh.
Footage posted on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, shows a branch of NewtWest. Over the top of the video a voice, presumed to be that of the filmmaker, says “cash machine giving out double money on the high street, East Ham.”
The footage from the London-based incident was posted on the page INSTA: IG1IG3, which claims to cover the areas of “ILFORD, SEVEN KINGS, GOODMAYES” and asks followers “NATIONWIDE” to “SEND IN YOUR CONTENT”. The caption above the footage stated: "Cash machine on East Ham High Street has gone rogue giving customers double cash".

The footage shows groups of people, seemingly mostly men, gathered around the cashpoint in question, presumably looking to cash in on the alleged anomaly. Jokes have already begun to pour in about the people in the video waking to find they had simply been getting charged double. “Stealing money from their own accounts, average East Ham residents I tell ya,” one person said.

“Who’s going to tell them where the money’s coming from?” another questioned. Another person, posting a gif of a man crying, said: “When they check their bank balance and realised it’s taken double their money and it’s not free money…”
In a similar tone, another wrote: “They won't like it when the bank takes the extra cash from their accounts later”. It remains to be seen whether or not the reports of double cash are certain and, if they are, people have been charged double for the transactions.
The Daily Star has contacted NatWest for comment and further details on the matter.
