Nicola Sturgeon witnessing her 'worst fears' claims Swinney
France is one of many European countries that have taken the decision to place restrictions on the UK in order to stop the spread of a new variant of COVID-19 across the continent following its discovery in the south of England. SNP Deputy First Minister John Swinney told Good Morning Scotland that the travel ban on Britain is a combination of Brexit and coronavirus uncertainty.
Mr Swinney said: “One of the issues we have been looking at very closely and making clear our concerns about is the danger for Scottish producers of so much activity being concentrated on the short straights.
“The UK Government I think is unable to so far provide any reassurance in a context of Brexit that there will be a straightforward crossing as it has been for the last 30 or 40 years.
“One of the things we have feared is essentially a conjunction of Brexit and Covid coming together.
“Unfortunately, over the weekend with the travel ban into France, that became a reality as a consequence of the decisions that have been taken.”

On Sunday evening Scotland’s First Minister demanded that Boris Johnson extended the Brexit transition period past the December 31, 2020 deadline.
Ms Sturgeon said: “It’s now imperative that the PM seeks an agreement to extend the Brexit transition period.
“The new COVID strain and the various implications of it means we face a profoundly serious situation and it demands our 100% attention.
“It would be unconscionable to compound it with Brexit.”

“The city is absolutely full. They are absolutely everywhere.
“There’s a garage nearby where people have spent the night because they didn’t manage to catch the last ferry into France.

“We spoke to two drivers from Romania, they’ve been here for five days already actually and they’re worried that they’re going to miss Christmas with their families.
“The reason they’ve been here for so long is that there were issues here even before the French Government had imposed this ban on couriers.
“There were backed up lorries for miles on the approach to Dover because of Brexit stockpiling and because of the Christmas rush.
“And now there’s a real concern on what this action by the French Government will do to traffic here.”
