Published as part of an annual tradition with the influential think tank The Bruges Group, Sir John’s tells the tale of an elf who was over the moon” when Britain voted to leave the EU in 2016 but since feels left down. Santa’s little helper goes on a mission through the “dark, and largely empty, Covid-cleared corridors of Whitehall”, looking for answers as to why freedom outside the EU has not been fully ceased.

“The problem was, while we left the EU, practically every EU law remained in place,” narrates Sir John.

“Our Brexit elf as always was positive, cheery, detained to see it through.

“He was sure there was a true Brexit that would be good news.

“He was equally sure we did not have it.”

Poking fun at Boris Johnson’s Government, Sir John recalls the elf’s disappointment and dismay as he talks to Cabinet ministers unable to find any wiling to champion his cause.

Cabinet Office minister Steve Barclay, Chancellor Rishi Sunak, and Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis all feature, being quizzed by the elf on what they are doing to bring about the “true Brexit”.

Even Foreign Secretary Liz Truss receives a visit from the steadfast elf.

The hilarious 12 minute long video is available to watch below in full.

Sir John is a veteran campaigner for Britain’s future outside the EU.

He campaigned for the UK to be freed from the bloc in the 1990s and pushed for a referendum on EU membership long before David Cameron made it Government policy.

A supporter of Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal he has since pushed the Government to go further to fully realise the opportunities of breaking away from Brussels.

He has pushed the Prime Minister to move faster in repealing EU laws and replacing them with less bureaucratic British regulation.

The Wokingham MP has also called for the UK to use its new found powers to fix problems being faced across the world, including a shortage of HGV drivers.

And he has called on the Government to continue to stick up for those who feel let down by the EU withdrawal agreement and trade deal.

Sir John has advocated Lord Frost using Article 16 of the Northern Ireland Protocol to legally suspend aspects of the treaty causing frictions for the UK’s internal market.

He also wants more to be done to help fisheries who feel frustrated EU regulations are making it harder to export goods to the continent.
