Bitmain Releases Ethereum Mining ASICs Antminer S15 and T15

Bitmain Release the Long Awaited Ethereum Mining ASICS

A few months ago Bitmain announced their intent to expand their ASIC capabilities to mine Ethereum. The company which major manufactures ASICs for mining bitcoin also recently started building computer processors. Their earlier announcement about building an Ethereum mining ASIC caused a mixed reaction from the Ethereum community

Ethereum is a GPU mineable cryptocurrency and Bitmain’s introduction of a more power mining ASIC could change the future of Ethereum mining. The Antminer S15 and T15 are available for order from the Bitmain’s official website. According to Bitmain’s specifications, the Antminer S15 has a 7nm chip with a hashing power of 28TH/S. The S15 with a power efficiency of 57J/TH sells for $1475.00. The unit weighs about 10 kg as a full pack and has a power consumption of 1596 watts.

Meanwhile, the Antminer T15 ASIC comes with a 7nm chip with a 23 TH/S hashing power and a power consumption of 1500 watts. The unit has a power efficiency of between 60J/TH to 67J/TH while operating at a temperature of 25-degree centigrade. The Antminer T15 weighs about 10 kg as a full package with its power supply. Bitmain is selling this unit for $913.00.

“We are officially announcing the release of our new 7nm miners which possess industry-leading hash rates designed to mine with the SHA256 algorithm. Two models will be offered, the Antminer S15 and T15. Available for purchase on 11/8.” Antminer announced on twitter

Bitmain Not Giving away Ethereum

Meanwhile part of the Ethereum community earlier threatens to initiate a fork if Bitmain builds an Ethereum mining ASIC, the company didn’t bow to the threat. Ethereum is majorly mine with GPUs with limiting hashing powers. Introducing powerful mining ASICS like the Antminer S15 and T15 could change the Ethereum mining future forever.

The release of the Antminers T15 AND S15 follows the release of the Bitmain Antminer E3 in July which offered a lower hashing power. Other companies like Linzhi also have miners with a processing power of up to 1.4GH/S which still lags behind the Bitmains S15 and T15 miners. Many people in the Ethereum community opposes to the introduction of powerful mining ASICs. Moreover, they fear about causing a centralize control over the network.

A community consensus within the network could brick miners with super powerful mining hardware. A fork can initiate after a voting to determine whether the community wants to move to ASICs mining or remain in GPU Mining. However technological advancement is inevitable and the Ethereum community should move along with the advancing technologies.
